Without sounding like our parents, yes technology has changed so much in the last fifteen years! The internet has taken over and we rarely go the day without reaching out into the world wide web! Mobile phones are in everyone’s purse – you actually feel kind of naked if you don’t have yours and you have to wonder what happened to the households with one phone (attached to the wall with the extra long cord) and there was only one line and no call waiting!
The world surely doesn’t seem as big as it once did and with families living at all corners of the world there is one way to stay connected that the kids will love too since it’s so interactive – skype.
If it’s good enough for Oprah its good enough for us (yes the talk show queen uses it on her show for satellite interviews!) and it’s real easy to operate too. (if my parents can do it….anyone can!). Just think how wonderful it would be to see your best friend’s son brush his own teeth for the first time down in Sydney, or show off to Aunty Betty in Melbourne that your daughter learned all the words to a new song at school – she can perform it live (bad pitch and all)!
The greatest thing about skype is that you can have video chats, so you can actually see the person you’re speaking with and even have a cuppa while you catch up! If you are having one of those days when you are still in your pyjamas at 2pm and you just want to hear your best friend’s voice well you can do just that (and turn the video off – not that she’d care). Most computers sold these days have cameras built in and if you have an older model you can pick up a webcam and microphone for less than your mobile bill.
The next greatest thing is that it’s free! That’s right call Canada, Peru or the UK for free if you are calling skype to skype. So tell your rellies, tell your friends to download skype and keep in closer touch with friends and family.
Make it a weekly or monthly event to reconnect with your favourite friends or family or your own kids if you have to travel with work. Skype helps to make you feel that little bit closer when you are far away.
