Nicole Swan - Fun Family Phonics

Written on the 12th of May 2009

Here are some words from Nicole Swan – Education Consultant and Guest Writer for Savvy Mama and some more information on the Fun Family Phonics Program.

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself, and thank Savvy Mama for welcoming me as a guest writer.

After graduating from Miami High on the Gold Coast, I embarked on a career in hospitality, which saw me on the front desk at local Gold Coast hotels such as Ocean Blue Resort and the Pan Pacific Hotel. During my time in hospitality, I spent some time in the ‘Kids Club” at Ocean Blue which I guess may have reignited a passion for children’s education I had felt since my Early Childhood. I left hospitality to concentrate on a career with children, firstly completing a Diploma in Early Childhood Education before deciding to shift to Canada to complete a Diploma in Montessori, a full time study under the direction of the Association Montessori International (AMI).

On completion of the AMI Montessori Diploma, I accepted a position as Directress of a private Montessori School in Vancouver, which specialized in the Early Education of Children aged from 2 and half years to 6 years. During my 9 years with this school, I implemented dance and movement programmes along with yoga classes for the children while also taking the opportunity to study Dyslexia, graduating as a tutor. It was through my study of Dyslexia that I discovered a program on phonics. The program was directed at the early ages and I found it was ideal for the children in my classes. I studied with the author of this program and graduated as a tutor, and immediately introduced this program into my classes with outstanding results.

Having spent 10 years in Canada, I returned to Australia in 2007 and commenced my studies in a Bachelor of Children Services at Bond University. During the course of my studies, I worked closely with Professor Caroline Fewster researching language and literacy programs, as well as having the opportunity to work with a private Speech and Language Specialist.

Working so closely with the children in Canada and seeing the brilliant results first hand, I have decided to introduce the same Phonics program into my tutoring business in Burleigh Heads, while teaching part-time in a local Montessori Setting.

In the upcoming months, I look forward to providing busy families with helpful tips about ways to assist their children to become successful learners.

Bruno Bettleheim, ‘A child’s attitude to reading is of such importance that more often than not it determines his scholastic fate. Moreover, his experience in learning to read may decide how he feels about learning in general and even himself as an individual.’

Kind Regards,
Nicole Swan.

Nicole teaches Fun Family Phonics locally in Burleigh, which makes learning to read and write a fun and creative adventure! Classes are available for children 4 years of age and up. She offers a patient, proactive approach to teaching the children phonics with an opportunity in each class to see, speak, hear, write and bring into play the new letters they learn.  For more information on Nicole’s classes call her on 0403 962 053 or email.

Parents with children involved in the classes have offered their comments:

“The huge change in my son’s learning and understanding is fantastic and in the comfort in myself, when you see how he loves his teacher and phonics class. Thank you.”

“I think the program you do and how you present it is wonderful.  My son really enjoys his time with you and is taking it all on board and his learning and recognizing the letter and sounds. We are very excited with his progress over such a short time.”

“My daughter arrives home after each weekly lesson with enthusiasm to talk about what her tutor has taught and she often comments with much fondness about her alliances she has made with the other children in the small tutoring group.”

Fun Family Phonics

The Fun Family Phonics Series is a culmination of 35 years of teaching experience. Muriel Endersby is the author of the popular phonics series. Muriel graduated in education in England. She has training in linguistics and ESL. She has taught English in many parts of the world, Africa, China, Canada and India. I was very keen to obtain certification to teach the Fun Family Phonics Series, and Muriel has provided me with a unique opportunity to introduce the series to Australia.

The Fun Family Phonics Series helps teach children to read with colorful interactive stories with aids that make learning fun and easy. The lessons have a multi-sensory approach to understanding phonics for the enjoyment of children of all ages through a story-telling approach with the use of music, crafts, drama and games. Children discover the alphabet sounds, the correct letter formation of each letter, blending sounds to build words, handwriting and much more. Children as young as three, become aware of the link between sounds and letters, an extremely important step in learning to read.

The children begin their journey with ‘Detective Dave Fun’, the boy puppet, as he discovers phonetic clues in the world around him and teaches his younger siblings how to discover the wonderful enjoyment of reading.

There are many discoveries in the humorous stories, and Dave discovers letter shapes and the sounds in his environment.  During the lessons, the use of the puppet as a detective, entertains the children with the colorful illustrations and stories, bringing the program to life. From Fun Family Phonics, children will be ready to move on to the Fun Family Fair series, where they will learn all the consonant and vowel blends, suffixes, prefixes, and much more. To complete the series, the children advance and work through a whole literacy program, ‘Ready to Read, Write and Spell,’ with Fun Family Phonics.

My aim as an educator is to help children to be successful learners, and this I capture in my teachings of the ‘Fun Family’ series.  My one-hour lessons have a maximum of four to six children per class, and are once a week over each school term for children 4 years of age and up.

Fun Family Phonics makes learning to read a fun and creative adventure.  It is a proven method that works!
