Some Christmas Spirit

Written on the 8th of December 2009

If you need a little kick start with the Christmas spirit this year, here are some tools to help get you fa la la la la’ing your way around town. Pull out that Christmas CD (even if it is Hi-5!) and bop about the house with tinsel draped around your neck – it is that merry time of year!

Here are some ideas to share Christmas with the kiddies ::

Dear Santa...

This sure beats a message in a bottle – a brilliant video message from Santa that is personalised for your little ones. Your kids will absolutely love this and won’t they be on their best behaviour after seeing Santa reading from his ‘naughty or nice’ book! All you have to do is enter some general details from whether they have been good girls or boys, what they want from Santa and upload a photo. They then send a link straight to your inbox. The video message is Santa himself and straight from the North Pole, making your little ones feel very special (and super excited for Christmas).

You can also write a letter to Santa (the ole fashioned way) and tell him what you dream of for Christmas (I am still waiting on Jamie Durie to come and do my backyard topless from 2004 – thanks Santa!) and drop it off at your local post office or post office box. Australia Post will make sure it gets to Santa and each little boy or girl will receive a letter back from Santa. Make sure you add your 55 cent stamp and include your return address in the letter. You can even download special Christmas Stationary online.

Christmas Crafts

Hand Print Santa

Materials Needed:
Red paper
Glue stick
Plain note card or card stock
Washable paint
Paper plates (for the paint)
Googly eyes

Instructions

1. Cut Santa-hat shapes (minus the pom-poms and white trim) from the red paper, then glue it onto the card. Glue a pair of googly eyes a fingertip's width below each hat.
2. Pour white paint onto one paper plate, and a dollop each of red, black, and pink (mix some red and white) onto another. Stamp white handprint beards, then use fingertips to stamp the trim on the hats, and a nose, mouth, and cheeks on each face.

If you are not feeling very crafty a glue jar and some glitter will go a long way. You can draw your favourite Christmas design (Christmas tree, bells, snowman etc) in glue on paper with an old paintbrush and add some glitter to make it sparkly and colourful. You can even cut them out for Christmas tree ornaments. Use old tissue paper, wrapping paper, cotton balls for more decorations.

Christmas Good Will

In amongst finding the best deal on a Wii or deciding between Holiday Barbie and a Bratz doll make sure that you take a moment to remember that the holidays are also about family and giving back.

Here are some ideas on ways that you can give back to the community and get the children involved in a selfless act of good will this holiday season:

• Pick out a toy to give to charity
• Visit sick children or elderly in hospital
• Take some Christmas crafts or home made cards to a nursing home
• Donate pre loved clothes
• Donate food to the food bank (let the kids pick out a bag from the pantry)
• Go through the toy boxes and clear out toys that are not used much these days and make a box you can donate to the less fortunate. This makes way for new toys too that Santa may bring!

Our Holiday Plans

Savvy Mama will continue to bring you our What’s On articles over the holidays, however our editorials will finish up for the year next week with a wrap up of Our Favourite Things this year – so a fun one to look out for! Look out for our What’s On a day earlier throughout those last two weeks of December as we will publish on a Wednesday to give you time to make your New Year’s Plans. We will return 4 January 2010 with our regular updates.

Merry Christmas from the Savvy Mama Team – we wish you and yours a magical Christmas Holiday!
