Parents need all the help they can get with toilet training their little tots – it’s a big milestone and a task that once mastered will give you a bit more freedom in mamaland and if anything a smaller handbag!
We’re not masters on the subject (just ordinary mums trying different things) so here are some tips on toilet training from the Raising Children Network and a few other tools that can help you on your way! It does take determination on both your part and the child’s so strap yourself in for a wild ride of wet knickers, pooey pants, and a little extra laundry.
If you are a mama that likes to fill up on knowledge from books before you start then how about taking a page from “Potty Training in One Week” by Gina Ford – which has tips from the routine queen on how to know when your child is ready and how to make it fun and rewarding to encourage trips to the loo.
Then there are tools like the wee man that helps boys learn the ritual just like Dad or the man in their life with a child size urinal that can attach to your toilet at home and encourage your little man to pee standing up. You can buy it online at Baby Zone Direct or Toys R Us and Babies Galore stock them too.
For the girls how about the double toilet seat that has two sizes, one for grown ups and one for the child. You just replace your toilet seat with the Lupi Lu toilet seat which has slow hinges to save fingers and you when you gotta go…you gotta go, so this little device saves little bums from touching down in the water of the bowl! Find it online at or at a Reece Plumbing store locally on the Coast.
Getting your toddler comfortable with the toilet means giving them a little independence, so if leaving them alone in the loo means a mountain of TP then check out this neat little toilet paper saver - now why didn’t we think of that! A simple device to save toilet paper from being used for dress up, clogging the toilet or as a scarf for the family pet.
For the night time challenges of bed wetting accidents you can save time and washing by using something like the Lucky Possum waterproof mattress protector that goes over your mattress and fitted sheet so that if a night time accident does occur it’s much easier to clean up. No need to change all the bedding just slip this cover off and machine wash and dry.
Whatever method or tools you decide to use, remember positive encouragement is the way to go to give your toddler the confidence and independence to keep trying. Every child will get there in there own time! Start off with a trip to the shops and some big boy or girl undies and a stash of stickers or treats that you can use as rewards. A chart is a great reward tool and you can either make your own or read more about Little Billies reward charts.
Remember be patient and have fun helping your toddler reach the toilet training goal.
